As the sole athletic trainer at Cazenovia High School in New York, Lizabeth Sherman, MS, ATC, CES has her work cut out for her. With everything from minor cuts to major sprains, she will sometimes treat as many as 40-50 athletes in the span of an hour and a half.
As a busy athletic trainer, Liz is always on the lookout for effective and efficient treatments she can use to keep up her students’ health and performance.
In 2023, she began using cold compression for high school athletes at Cazenovia. Now, after a busy football season, she reports that PowerPlay has helped them recover better and get back in the game.
Immediate Results with Cold Compression
“I’ve never been able to utilize compression before,” Liz shared. “It’s definitely helpful.”
So far, she has prioritized her PowerPlay system with acute injuries. She sees an ankle or knee injury almost every game, and she’s already had a patella dislocation this season.
“One athlete with a patella dislocation loved it. He swears by it now. He’s returning back to play, but even now with his swelling gone, he’s still begging me to use it.”
The results are often immediate.
“Cold compression therapy can restore some range of motion and decrease pain so athletes can complete some rehab exercises,” she explains. “I think of it as a pump to push swelling out of the injured area.”
When she’s able to get ahead of the game, Liz also uses cold compression for high schoolers with chronic pain and problem areas. She’s seeing more recurring ankle injuries and has a football player with some edema that’s not going away.
The Power of Portability
Cazenovia has been undergoing a home-field turf project this fall, leaving Liz and her athletes feeling a bit displaced.
But with PowerPlay’s battery power and insulated carry bags, she’s been able to provide cold compression to her athletes whenever and wherever it’s needed.
Boosting Efficiency for a Busy Athletic Trainer
The PowerPlay pump can power up to three devices simultaneously, each with its own timer. That means physical therapists and athletic trainers like Liz can use it to treat multiple patients simultaneously.
That’s a big help for Liz, who can set it up and give several athletes 20 minutes of continuous therapy while she has a chance to look at other patients.
“I have used it with two people at a time in the office. It worked great. A lot of the kids came in and saw what was going on, they thought it was so cool.”
