Gel Pack FAQs

PowerPlay’s gel packs allow for on-the-go cryotherapy without ice or water. This is perfect for physical therapists who want to treat patients without the mess, or for athletes who want to recover from a stadium, locker room, or airport. We offer a range of cold therapy gel packs so you can get relief and recovery for several major joints and injury-susceptible areas.

Below, we’ve answered some common questions about our cold therapy gel packs:

Place the gel pack in the freezer or refrigerator until it’s cold. Then, insert the cryotherapy pack into the appropriate compression sleeve, and use our compression pump to begin your session. Only use the packs for 20 minutes per session. After 20 minutes, you can place the gel pack back in the freezer or ice chest so that it’s ready for your next session. See the gel packs in action in this demo of the shoulder wrap.

The PowerPlay gel packs can be heated in the microwave for up to one minute. Make sure the heat is distributed evenly throughout the wrap before using. Learn more about cold and heat therapy.

Depending on the method you use to cool your gel pack (freezer, refrigerator or submerged in ice), it can get as cold as 17˚ F. It’s important to use a protective barrier between the gel pack and your skin to avoid any tissue damage. You may also let the gel pack sit at room temperature for a few minutes before applying. Therapeutic cold has been shown to be between 40 and 60 degrees F, so you may prefer a gel pack from the refrigerator or ice chest as opposed to a freezer.

Typically, it takes about one hour in the freezer for the gel pack to cool completely.

Don’t put a cold gel pack directly on the skin — this can cause tissue damage. Always use a protective barrier such as a light T-shirt, sock, or any other thin cloth between the skin and the gel pack. A protective barrier is included with each of our gel packs for your convenience.

The gel packs will stay cold when kept in the insulated carrying case for 4-6 hours. If you keep them in the case until treatment, they will stay cold during treatment for 20-40 minutes. Extra gel packs may be purchased for $39-$49 each if you’d like to have more than one on hand.

You can wipe down the gel packs with 3% hydrogen peroxide or sanitary wipes. Check out complete cleaning instructions.
